Echinococcosis


Echinococcosis (aka hydatid disease) is a parasitic disease of tapeworms which affects mammals and humans. The condition is quite common in horses, dogs, rodents and sheeps. There are three types that can be found in humans- cystic, alveolar and polycystic. These are each caused by different Echinococcosis species. This condition can develop when a human ingests Echinococcosis multilocularis eggs shed in dog feces which can also contain tapeworms in adult stages. It is usually diagnosed using a combination of serology tests, ultrasound and CT. Treatments for this ailment comprises of high-dose Albendazole therapy or surgical intervention.
