Failure to thrive

This term is more commonly used in paediatric cases and refers the weight of a child being abnormally low. It can be due to insufficient absorption of nutrients or excessive usage of energy that causes weight loss or insufficient weight gain. When not treated properly, the reduced weight of the child can often affect their height- resulting in poor physical growth. It can also affect the growth of the brain leading to a reduced head circumference. The caregiver has a vital role in reversing the effect when there is Failure to Thrive by monitoring nutritional intake and ensuring sufficient feeding of the child.
