Fragile X Associated Tremor Ataxia Syndrome

This is a condition that usually involves those over the age of 50. Fragile X Associated Tremor Ataxia Syndrome (FXTAS) causes concerns in physical and mental ability. Symptoms worsen as those with FXTAS get older. FXTAS can cause muscles to tremble during voluntary movement. There can also be concerns with balancing and coordination. Those with FXTAS can also have concerns with sensations, weakened muscles, or tingling pain. Mental ability or cognition is affected, which is evident through memory loss or problems in solving problems. FXTAS is more common in men. Though a large number of people are affected by FXTAS, only a percentage develops signs.

Efficacy of Alternative and Other Treatments According to GRADE* Ranking:

Folic Acid [1, 2, 3, 4]:

Please note, this management does NOT treat the condition itself. It is proposed only as a weak supportive symptomatic support, and even then, has insufficient evidence to back up this claim at present.

Recommendation: Weakly in favor (Studies show that folic acid may be beneficial to those with FXTAS. More studies are needed)

Grade of Evidence: Low quality of evidence
