This condition leads to milky discharge through the nipples which is not associated with breastfeeding. Galactorrhea usually occurs in women, but it can also occur in children and men. This condition can be a side effect of breast stimulation or prescription drug use. Galactorrhea can also be the symptom of an underlying disorder affecting the pituitary gland. In most cases, increased levels of prolactin, which is the hormone that helps produce milk, is the cause of galactorrhea. Additional symptoms include headache, eye problems, and irregular menstrual cycles. Although galactorrhea normally resolves on its own, it is always best to visit a doctor, as galactorrhea can be a sign of another underlying condition.
