Bone Marrow Depression

There are three types of cells in your bone marrow: white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets. These cells are sensitive to radiation therapy. As such, the number of white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets may decrease depending on the part of the body being treated and the dosage of radiation. Bone marrow depression due to radiation therapy is usually temporary, but in some cases may be permanent.
