Muscle Atrophy

Muscle atrophy is defined as a decrease in the mass of a muscle. There are two types of muscle atrophy; disuse atrophy and neurogenic atrophy. Disuse atrophy occurs from a lack of physical activity. This form of muscle atrophy can be reversed with exercise and proper nutrition. Neurogenic atrophy occurs when there is an injury to, or a disease of, a nerve that connects to the muscle. Neurogenic atrophy occurs more suddenly than disuse atrophy.
